CTIT (Centre for Telematics and Information Technology) of the University of Twente in the Netherlands is one of the largest academic ICT research institutes in Europe. Over 475 researchers actively participate in the research programme. Integration of technology-based research and its application in specific domains is a clear focus of CTIT.

Its unique multi-disciplinary approach makes the institute an attractive partner. The institute maintains an extensive international network of contacts and working relations with academia and industry. This network includes ICT and manufacturing companies, universities and research institutes, health care organisations, financial institutes, governmental organisations, and logistics service providers.

CTIT is one of the founding fathers of the Netherlands Institute for Research on ICT (NIRICT). NIRICT bundles the ICT research activities of the three Universities of Technology in the Netherlands.

Mission

Integration of technology-based research and its application in specific domains is a clear focus of CTIT. Therefore, our mission is ‘To be an internationally acknowledged scientific research institute in the area of design and application of advanced telematics and information technology systems, and their integration into user environments’.

Research themes

The next generation of ICT will enable the creation of systems that are more intelligent and personalized, thus centered on the user. Location, presence, authentication and ubiquitous all-IP communication are key enablers for the emergence of new personalized and context-aware products, services and applications, business models and processes. ICT innovation involves not only the development of new technological knowledge, but also the creative application of that knowledge. And ICT does not just enable us to do new things, ICT shapes how we do them. This constitutive character requires a research approach that combines perspectives from technology, business models and user needs. If we are to unlock the transformational effects of ICT, we need to move on in accommodating the user perspective. Therefore, greater efforts have been made to taking into account user requirements, including research results from the social and behavioral sciences. The integration of technology-based research and its application in specific domains has become a clear focus of CTIT. It therefore bundled its research into six Strategic Research Orientations, to create focus and sufficient critical mass around specific strategic topics:

  • Applied Science of Services for Information Society Technologies (ASSIST
  • Wireless and Sensor Systems (WiSe)
  • Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN)
  • Natural Interaction in Computer-Mediated Environments (NICE)
  • Integrated Security and Privacy in a Networked World (ISTRICE)
  • Industrial Engineering and ICT (IE&ICT)

Partnership

By deliberately choosing to combine technology and application oriented research, CTIT has situated itself in a unique position. Exploiting a thorough knowledge of operational processes in specific application areas to identify ICT needs in that area, and at the same time being able to fill in these needs based on the latest technological developments, is a combination that is seldom present in one research institute. The unique multi-disciplinary approach makes the institute an attractive partner: the institute maintains an extensive international network of contacts and working relations with academia and industry. This network includes ICT and manufacturing companies, universities and research institutes, health care organisations, financial institutes, governmental organisations, and logistics service providers.
